(Or how to be an entrepreneur without turning into a movie villain)
Making money without destroying the planet (hard, but not impossible)
When you think of a “businessperson,” you might picture someone in an expensive suit, on a yacht, yelling on the phone. But… there’s also another type: the one who makes money while making the world better.
Yes, they exist. It’s called social impact entrepreneurship. And no, it doesn’t mean giving your stuff away. It means having a business that generates income while also solving a real problem.
So… what is a business with social impact?
It’s a business that:
- Has products or services that help others or the planet.
- Generates profit without harming the world (thank goodness).
- Provides solutions where there used to be only complaints.
Examples:
- Clothing made from recycled materials.
- Apps that promote mental health.
- Stores that donate part of their profits to important causes.
Myths (and truths that get comically misunderstood)
- “Social businesses are for hippies who live on hugs.” → FALSE.
- “If you help the world, you can’t make money.” → FALSE.
- “You have to choose between doing good or being successful.” → LEGENDARY level FALSE.
The truth: you can run a profitable business and help at the same time. In fact, people love supporting brands with a purpose. It’s marketing with a heart.
Real cases that aren’t fairy tales
- Javi sold reusable bottles with cool designs. For every purchase, he donated a portion to beach cleanup programs. Result: sales, impact, and respect at recess.
- Sofi created bracelets made by women in her community. She gave them work, told their stories, and her customers felt part of something bigger.
- Nico developed an app to practice first aid through mini-games. His mission: to get more teenagers to know how to act in emergencies.
Why should you care about this if you’re 15 with millionaire dreams?
Because the world needs fresh ideas. And because being young is no excuse to ignore problems. In fact, you have an advantage:
- You think outside the box (or outside the classroom).
- You understand social media, trends, and culture.
- You can start small, but with real impact.
And let’s be honest: it’s way cooler to change lives than to just sell stuff for the sake of selling!
How to get started (without it feeling like a boring ethics class)
- Spot a problem that bothers you. (Litter in the streets, bullying, inequality, etc.)
- Think about how to help using what you’re good at.
- Design something simple, but with soul. A product, a service, an experience.
- Measure your impact (and your financial math). Count how many people you help, how much you reduce, how much you transform.
- Share it with pride. Your story can inspire others.
The businesses of the future have heart
More and more brands are changing:
- Plastic-free.
- With fair trade.
- With inclusion and diversity.
And consumers (that is, you and me) are demanding it. We want to buy with a conscience. We want what we use to also say something about who we are.
Final thought (with an inspiring soundtrack and a soft lo-fi playlist)
Being an entrepreneur isn’t just about selling. It’s about creating, connecting, and improving something, with clear principles about how you do it. And if you also make money… congratulations, you’ve unlocked a new level!
Next time you think about starting a business, ask yourself:
“How can I do this in a way that also does good for others?”
Because changing the world doesn’t start with a giant investment fund. Sometimes, it starts with a tiny idea, a huge drive… and a good reason to try.
