What Is Inflation and How Does It Affect Us?

(Or why yesterday juice cost 1 and today it looks like a luxury drink)

The mystery of prices that rise on their own
One day you buy a burger for2. The next month, it costs 2.50. The next,3. You wonder: “Does the meat come from cows with a pedigree?” No. It’s inflation.

Inflation is that silent ghost that makes everything cost more, without things actually getting better. It’s as if money loses strength over time, like an old superhero who can no longer even lift a soda.

So… what is inflation?

Inflation is the general rise in prices in an economy. We’re not talking about just one product: EVERYTHING starts costing more.

When there’s inflation:

 • The same money buys less.
 • Saving under the mattress becomes a bad idea.
 • And your mom starts every sentence with: “In my day, that cost pennies…”

Causes (with explanations that won’t put you to sleep)

 1. Too much money circulating: If the central bank prints a lot of money, there’s more cash, but not more products. Result: everything goes up in price.
 2. Rising costs: If the price of gasoline goes up, that makes everything that gets transported go up too. Spoiler: that’s almost everything.
 3. High demand: If everyone wants the same thing (a PS5, Bad Bunny tickets, fidget toys), prices skyrocket.

How it affects you (and your teenage wallet)

 • Your allowance is worth less.
 • Your favorite snacks go up in price.
 • Months of savings now only get you… half a combo meal.

Inflation isn’t just a problem for adults in ties. It’s something that affects your daily life, even if you don’t pay taxes yet (enjoy it while it lasts).

A real example with (economic) drama

Imagine you keep 10 in a box for a year. At first you could buy 5 burgers. A year later, with that same10 you can only buy 3.5.

It’s not that the burgers got fancier. It’s that your money lost value.

Is inflation always bad?

A little bit of inflation can be good. It means the economy is moving. But when it gets out of control… it’s like putting hot sauce on everything: it ruins the food and makes you cry.

In countries with hyperinflation, prices change daily. Literally. What you bought today costs double tomorrow. Result: chaos, memes, and a lot of frustration.

How to protect yourself (even if you’re not the minister of economy)

 • Learn to save in something that grows over time.
 • Avoid keeping stagnant money. Think about options like investing it instead of just holding onto it.
 • Get informed. Understanding inflation already puts you above average.

And, above all: think twice before spending. Because that money could be worth less very soon.

Final thought (in a wise-grandma tone)

Inflation isn’t seen, but it’s felt. In prices, in your decisions, in your savings. It’s not about living in fear, but about understanding how the world works.

Next time you hear that everything is going up, ask yourself:

“What can I do today so my money doesn’t melt like ice in the sun?”

Because in the real world, economic knowledge is worth something. And if you understand inflation, you’re already winning.

(By the way, buy that juice before it goes up again.)
