Are We Going to Live Better in the Future? Technology, Jobs, and Long-Term Quality of Life

(Or: whether AI is going to take your job before you even get one)


Every generation, at some point, gets scared by the same question: is technology going to leave us without jobs? Weavers asked it when weaving machines showed up, office workers asked it when computers arrived, and now you’re asking it about artificial intelligence. Let’s look at it calmly.


The paradox that confuses everyone

Here’s the strange part: every major technological leap in history destroyed jobs… and at the same time, total unemployment, in the long run, didn’t skyrocket forever. How is that possible?

The short answer: technology destroys specific tasks, but it also creates industries, products, and jobs that didn’t exist before. Nobody in 1990 had the job of “content creator” or “user experience designer.” Those jobs didn’t exactly replace the ones that were lost, but they did absorb a lot of people that technology “freed up” from older tasks.


The case of the horses (yes, seriously)

Before cars, millions of horses worked hauling people and goods around. When the automobile showed up, demand for transportation horses collapsed. The horses, literally, had no “new job” left to do: they couldn’t retrain to code or handle customer service.

“Some economists use this example as a warning: what if someday humans also run out of a ‘next job’ to jump to?”

It’s a real, open debate. So far, humanity has always found new tasks to be useful at whenever technology automates the old ones. But nobody can guarantee that stays true forever, especially with technologies that don’t just replace muscle (like machines did), but also part of our thinking (like artificial intelligence).


So, should I be scared?

It depends on how much your future work depends on repetitive, predictable tasks (the easiest to automate) versus tasks that require creativity, human judgment, or dealing with other people (much harder to replace, at least for now).

  • Repetitive tasks with clear rules → higher risk of automation.
  • Tasks that require creativity, negotiation, empathy, or complex decisions in ambiguous situations → lower risk, at least in the short-to-medium term.

This doesn’t mean “don’t study anything tech-related” — it means don’t bet your entire career on a purely repetitive task still being valuable 15 years from now.


The flip side: living better with less effort

It’s not all threat. Technology also means that, on average, humanity produces more while working (relatively) fewer hours than a century ago. Things that used to be luxuries (electricity, clean water, medicine, instant communication) are now basic and accessible to far more people than before.

The real challenge isn’t “whether we’ll have jobs or not,” but how that progress gets shared out: who gets left behind while technology moves forward, and what countries do (education, job-transition policies, social safety nets) so that transition isn’t devastating for the people who lose their jobs along the way.


What can you do, today?

  • Develop skills that combine technology WITH human thinking (not one or the other).
  • Learn to learn fast, because whatever you study today will probably change several times over your career.
  • Don’t underestimate “soft” skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving: those are exactly the hardest to automate.

The question isn’t whether the future is going to change. It’s going to change, it always has. The question is whether you’re going to be ready to move with it.
